A Vanity Fair employee portrayed in the Netflix show “Inventing Anna” sued Monday, claiming she wrongly portrayed the series as “immoral,” “greedy,” “arrogant” and “traitorous.”
Rachel Williams was friends with Anna Sorokin, the convicted con artist at the center of the show. Williams was defrauded of $62,000 and wrote Vanity Fair Article – Commodity A book about experience. Netflix series adapted from a New York Magazine article About Sorokin.

Alexander Rufus Isaacs, Williams’ attorney, said she suffered a severe backlash online in the wake of the series.
“If you want to base a character on a real person, and you want to make him a villain, don’t use his real name,” Rufus Isaacs said in an interview. “I hope the creators understand that. If they want to make an unpleasant character, they can’t use a real person’s name unless all they say is absolute gospel.”
Rufus-Isaacs also represents Nonna Gabrindashvili, the Georgian chess master who sued Netflix for a reference to her in the series “The Queen’s Gambit.”
The attorney said he sued “Inventing Anna” in Delaware because Netflix is listed there and because “we like Delaware law.” In Delaware, Netflix will not be able to file an anti-SLAPP request to get rid of the enclosure.
Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
HBO chose Williams’ article and book, but the project was discontinued and no longer in development.
The lawsuit cites media coverage that called out Williams’ portrayal in “Inventing Anna.” Columnist for The Independent Wrote That show looked like a “personal vendetta” against her.
“For a show interested in gray areas,” the author wrote, “”Inventing Anna” does everything it can to make us hate Rachel.
The lawsuit also cites the New York Post vertical who mistook the series for Sorokin’s portrayal of a “feminist icon” and Williams as the “evil witch of the West”.
In an interview with Vanity Fair in February, Williams criticized Netflix and producer Shonda Rhimes for “trying to diverge between fact and fiction.”
“I think this is a particularly dangerous space,” Williams said. “It’s a really comforting story that people come up with. But when you do that, you have to realize that you are not looking for the truth.”
